'Transformers' tops 'Tammy'; 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' opens Friday

‘‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ trounced a trio of newcomers and topped a tepid Fourth of July weekend box office, according to industry figures reported by movie tracking site Box Office Mojo on Monday.

The fourth entry into the ‘Transformers’ franchise grossed $37 million in ticket sales from Friday to Sunday for a total of $175.3 million since opening June 27.

Melissa McCarthy comedy ‘Tammy’ opened at No. 2 with $21.5 million for a total of $33.3 million since its Wednesday release.

Action comedy sequel ‘22 Jump Street’ slipped one notch to No. 3 in its fourth weekend, earning $9.8 million for a total of $159.2 million since opening June 13.

Horror film ‘Deliver Us from Evil’ debuted at No. 4 with $9.7 million for a total of $15.2 million since opening Wednesday.

Animated fantasy adventure sequel ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ dropped two spots to No. 5 in its fourth weekend, earning $8.9 million for a total of $140 million since opening June 13.

Two other new nationwide releases struggled over the weekend.

Family sci-fi adventure ‘Earth to Echo’ opened at No. 6 with $8.3 million for a total of $13.5 million since its Wednesday release.

The documentary ‘America’ debuted at No. 11 with $2.7 million for a total of $4 million since opening in limited release June 27.

FRIDAY’S NATIONWIDE RELEASE

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ is the sci-fi action sequel to 2011’s ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes.' In ‘Dawn,’ the ape Caesar leads a growing population of genetically evolved apes threatened by human survivors who survived a devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. A stellar 95 percent of reviews were positive on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film featured ‘intelligence and emotional resonance to match its stunning special effects.’ Rated PG-13. TUESDAY’S DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASES

‘Bad Words’ is a wicked comedy about a boy who loses a spelling bee in eighth grade and later seeks revenge by exploiting a loophole in the rules and competing as a 40-year-old adult. Sixty-four percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film is ‘scabrously funny and gleefully amoral.’ Starring Jason Bateman who also directs. Rated R. ‘The Raid 2’ is the Indonesian martial arts action crime sequel to 2011’s ‘The Raid: Redemption.’ In ‘The Raid 2,’ an undercover cop tries to bring down the criminal underworld in Jakarta and uncover corruption within his own police force. Seventy-nine percent of reviews were positive on Rotten Tomatoes, which said the film’s ‘high-energy plot and over-the-top violence … definitely delivers more of everything audiences loved about its predecessor.’ Rated R.
