'Transformers: Age of Extinction' first teaser trailer premieres

On Feb. 2, 2014, Paramount Pictures premiered the first teaser trailer of "Transformers: Age of Extinction." And so far, the clip has been generating a lot of Internet buzz, including being one of the Top 10 searches on Google that day. A robotic dinosaur (or "dinobot") is featured in the clip, which hints that there will be prehistoric creatures heavily featured in the movie.

"Transformers: Age of Extinction," the fourth movie in the "Transformers" franchise, is set for release in the U.S. and Canada on June 27, 2014, and arrives in U.K. cinemas on July 10, 2014. Release dates in other countries may vary. The cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer. The film is directed by Michael Bay, who has helmed all of the "Transformers" movies so far.

"Transformers: Age of Extinction" is the first "Transformers" movie without Shia LaBeouf, who starred in the first three "Transformers" movies: 2007's "Transformers," 2009's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and 2011's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." LaBeouf has said in interviews that he walked away from the "Transformers" movies because he wanted to do films that mean more to him artistically.

Although many people commenting on "Transformers: Age of Extinction" clip say that the visual effects look top-notch, there is still considerable skepticism with moviegoers that the film's plot and acting will be any good. Viewers also seem to be divided over whether Wahlberg or LaBeouf is a better star for the "Transformers" franchise.

All of the "Transformers" movies since the first "Transformers" flick have been universally panned by critics, who often name the "Transformers" movies among the worst of the year.

Despite these bad reviews, the "Transformers" movies so far have been major blockbusters and reached the Top 3 of the biggest-box office hits in the U.S. in each year that a "Transformers" movie has been released. Here are the statistics, according to Box Office Mojo:

  • "Transformers" — $319 million at the U.S./Canadian box office. No. 3 movie of 2007 in the U.S. and Canada.
  • "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" — $402 million at the U.S./Canadian box office. No. 2 movie of 2009 in the U.S. and Canada.
  • "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" — $352 million at the U.S./Canadian box office. No. 2 movie of 2011 in the U.S. and Canada.

Here is a sampling of comments about the "Transformers: Age of Extinction" clip on the Internet:

From the "Transformers: The Age of Extinction" Facebook page:

"The dinobots are meant to be autobots! Deffo doesn't look like they are in this 4 · 3 hours ago Daniel Gravestock Big old glass of nope!"

"I'm a fan of all the Bay TF movies no matter what anyone says about them. Maybe the plots are paper thin, maybe there's lots of explosions and maybe the actors aren't great but to be honest I watch it for the spectacle and for the big robots kicking ass. Very excited for this film! I think its kind of fashionable for people to hate on directors and movies but Bays TF still makes tons of money (enough for 4 films at least) so in the end the fans win. Cant stand those nostalgia fanboys either!"

"Optimus Prime riding a f*cking dinobot? Mind = blown."

"I hope u all realise it's Ganna make no sence now all the original actors are in it it's Ganna be a compleat wast i know it cas how's it's Ganna make sence withe out anny one we no."

"Im not keen on this & for some reason i dont think it'll be as good as the last three transformer movies. Maybe because Mark Wahlberg doesnt fit the Transformers franchise as id thought, dont get me wrong hes a good actor & all but not for Transformers."

"Seriously? shia lebouf was terrible! i think mark will do a much better job."

From Paramount Pictures' YouTube channel:

"This actually looks like it could be good, but then again it could suck even worse than the third. But, Mark Wahlberg does look great."

"This is just a teaser, no doubt they have finishing touches to do, also I don't think it looks worse at all."

"They better not kill off jazz."

"Jazz isn't even in this. He's dead still. In case you didn't know, this is a continuation of the trilogy."

"Awesome tv spot! can't wait for a long trailer! optimus riding grimlock is sooooo amazing! also megatron back as Galvatron is pretty cool but im sure hes gonna die....but come back again."

"Looks awesome, but.... ....Michael Bay."

"Agreed. I will still watch it, but i am keeping my expectations very, very low."

"Just watching it for the action, not looking for plot, if you go into it thinking like that then you will have a good time, I did that for the third movie and enjoyed myself seeing all the pretty explosions lol."

"Worst movie of 2014."

"Giant robots riding giant robot dinosaurs. I am unable to resist watching this."
