Congress has the sworn duty to oversee and pass trade regulations but recent presidents from both political party's have sought something called fast track where Congress agrees to review trade deals while giving up the ability to add amendments to the treaty. It is little more than a corporate rubber stamp. Starting yesterday, the Obama Administration was seeking fast track approval for TAFTA and The Trans Pacific Partnership.
These two pending trade agreements have been kept well guarded secrets for the simple reason that when these trade deals aren't kept secret the public defeats them. TAFTA is a deal pending with the European Union nations, and Trans Pacific Partnership, both written solely by Corporate America with no input from environmental interests, labor, human rights, or groups with food safety concerns like GMO's. (Genetically Mutated Organisms) are about to come before Congress and amount to a corporate coup d'état over our democratic republic.
The Trans Pacific Partnership which involves most of the nations of the Pacific rim, which is a grouping that is 40% larger than the 27 nation EU, has been negotiated almost completely in secret has been described as being NAFTA on steroids. TPP would seem to remove many protections for free speech, would regulate the internet, and destroy many aspects of American national sovereignty.
Here is only a partial list of the effects of TPP if allowed to get fast track authority and be passed into law. Once a treaty is passed it has the force of Constitutional guarantees even as it would seem to rob American citizens of many protections under he bill of rights.
First of all it would enable the offshoring of millions of good paying American jobs. What jobs this treaty creates in America would be mostly low wage service economy jobs.
In addition GMO labeling would be severely restricted. This part of the deal would also enable the import of goods into America that do not meet food safety standards.
TPP would also contain language that would severely restrict internet freedom. The language would be similar to CISPA and some of the other attempts at internet control that failed to pass Congress because of public dissent.
TPP would also roll back what few regulations are left on the Wall Street banksters. This would open the door to even more speculative trading and many of the causes of the economic crash of 2008.
TPP would give corporations the power to sue in private tribunals, like the World court at the Hague. These tribunals will have the power to overturn environmental, labor laws, or laws that restrict trade or profits even in the interests of a nations own citizens. They will also demand huge taxpayer funded payouts in damages and will encourage privatization of public lands and national resources.
This non deal needs desperately to see the light of day. Tell your Congressman no Fast Track for TPP.
