America is just beginning to see the effects of Obamacare and realizing they have been taken. It will be several years before they realize the effects of the takeover of our education system. As of this date 45 states have traded the education of their children for ready cash. Similar to the Patient Protection and Affordability act which does neither, this is called Common Core. The stated goal is to provide common core standards for every student to prepare them for college and the future. Its real goal is to level the playing field by transforming education for every child. Long term it is to make sure every school gets the same funding.
So how did this happen under our very noses and no one notice? During the heady no budget days of Obama’s first term the stimulus increased the Department of Educations discretionary budget over 25,000%. At the same time the evil Bush’s No Child left Behind was replaced with Race to the Top. Combined with seed money from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and Achieve a non-profit software provider they created 13 years of standards in one year. They didn’t do it alone they had help from Arne Duncan head of Education, Bill Ayers 60’s terrorist and Nevin Brown head of Achieve.
Now that they had a product to sell, how to get it by pesky states that have ultimate control over what is taught in the schools they pay for. This was done by offering grants directly to school districts thru the newly created “Race to the Top”. One of the requirements was the district had to use an internationally benchmarked teaching method to be eligible. Coincidentally during the buy in process the only program was Common Core. When questioned on the mythology used to arrive at internationally benchmarked enough states had joined to make it unnecessary and it was removed.
What really did these state give up local control for. Common Core is standards for Math and English language arts. The proficiency in these two subjects will be measured by tests sold by the companies that developed the core standards. In English the students are allowed to read books half of the time in early grades. By High School the standard is only 30% of the time is to be allocated to actually reading musty old books. How is the rest of the time spent? Well reading things like glowing press reviews of the current administration and fascinating literary greats like executive orders. Imagine you child sharing how great Obama’s executive order number 11001 allowing the government to mobilize civilians into work brigades among their friends with the same glee as Twilight or the Hunger Games.
Just like Obamacare more people are beginning to see the reality verses the hype and are beginning to try to opt out. The five states that never signed on were Texas, Minnesota, Virginia, Nebraska, and Alaska. Currently 13 states have realized their mistake and are working to untangle themselves from this mess. This untested system for transforming education in America thru the Federal Government is not slated to take full implementation until 2014 so time is short but not over.
