Description: The Socratic seminar is a collaborative, intellectual dialogue facilitated with open-ended questions about a text. The seminar, a literacy strategy for all content areas, is designed to increase understanding of textual ideas and values as well as an understanding of self and others. As a primary tool for the rigorous examination and analysis of complex text(s), the seminar and the seminar cycle, when paired with academic coaching and didactic instruction, become powerful tools for the development and practice of the Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening skills emphasized in the PA Core Standards. In addition, the seminar and core components of the seminar cycle embed and scaffold instructional practices referenced in Doman 3: Instruction of the Framework for Teaching Evaluation Instrument (2011). Domain 3b: Questioning and Discussion Techniques encourages students to make connections among concepts or events previously believed to be unrelated and arrive at new understandings of complex materials (Danielson, 2011). Lastly, in a cultural context, the seminar builds and refines all social and communication skills.
