GNU V.1.2 Aut:Shawn Jones "Charleston County Rescue Squad - Large Anmial Rescue Team works to remove a trapped horse from an overturned horse trailer"
The SPCA in Monterey County, CA is helping the San Juan Bautista Fire Department to train firefighters on how to rescue horses, cows or other large livestock. The training will better help the firefighters for large animals that may have fallen over a ravine, their trailer overturns or if falling down a ravine, they become wedged between two trees. These are all far more common than people think and the fire departments are the ones that are called. Most fire departments do not seem to have this training and they make do with whatever means they can. With the proper training from the SPCA, the firefighters are more confident when responding to this type of call.
The SPCA held a two day training camp, where one day was inside a classroom and the second day was out in the field. The training was not limited to just firefighters, it also had people from animal control, the SPCA investigation officers and several rescue teams from around the state. There were 17 people total taking the training. The class is put on by John and Deb Fox of the Large Animal Rescue Co. of Hollister. John Fox has four horse mannequins that weigh about 400 pounds. This is not the weight of an actual horse, but it gives them an idea of what they are supposed to be doing.
During the training the trainees are learning how to tie knots, create slings, work the sleds, pulleys and winches. All of this is necessary when trying to work with a very large, frightened and thrashing animal that does not understand what is happening. These training sessions usually happen once a year at the SPCA, but they have been known to do them for private sets of horse owners. The foxes travel around the country offering this class to help with making people better aware of what needs to be done when rescuing a horse or livestock type animal from a situation.
