Trainer to Gwyneth Paltrow and J Lo, Tracy Anderson shares weight loss secrets

Do you really need to exercise regularly? And it possible to regard food as a friend rather than a foe while still winning at weight loss? Celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson explored the answers to those questions on a recent episode of Bethenny Frankel's talk show, as well as her top tips on how to get your body in tip-top shape.

After working with superstars like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez, Tracy knows what it takes to tighten and tone your body effectively. Although Bethenny contends that you don't need to exercise regularly, Tracy says that it's essential to make exercise a part of your life.

"Exercise is life-giving," Tracy told Bethenny firmly. Make it part of your life to enhance your health and happiness.

How often do you need to exercise? Tracy recommends working out five to six times each week to manage the hormonal changes that occur. That way, you'll have a balanced body and toned muscles.

Tracy has created an approach called "The Tracy Anderson Method," which she teaches in classes. It's also available in DVD, such as "Tracy Anderson Method: Mat Workout" and "The Method for Beginners: The Weight Loss Kick Start That Makes Perfection Possible."

As for food, Tracy feels that it's important to have a good relationship with what you eat. She's not a fan of juice cleanses, feeling that they're like drinking high calorie versions of water. Fresh fruit, in contrast, provides you with fiber and take longer to eat.

In addition, Tracy advises against quick fixes like fad diets. Make lifestyle changes rather than going on crash diets, then a binge, then another crash diet.

She's authored a book that combines her diet and fitness guidelines: "Tracy Anderson's 30-Day Method: The Weight-Loss Kick-Start that Makes Perfection Possible" (click for details).

Seeking help with sticking to your New Year's resolutions? In a column for People magazine, Tracy recently offered these tips:

  • Make personal goals based on yourself, focusing on what's unhealthy that you want to change.
  • Put yourself first.
  • Know your body and its needs. Don't assume that because a magazine claims that one food is good, it's right for you (example: Tracy says that she's allergic to avocado, which is constantly touted as the latest wonder food).
  • Be kind to yourself.
