Some activities are too... unique to be categorized. And yet they are also just too cool to be overlooked.
One of the things I love about living in New York; the reason that I, a Frugal Family Examiner, put up with the exorbitant rents, the ridiculous costs of food, school, transportation, clothes, what have you, is the fact that, in NYC, anything is possible.
Last week, I wrote about the 27th Annual Sword Dance Festival. We went. There were teams there from around the world.
Sword dancers from around the world. Who knew it was even a thing, much less that there are international teams engaged in it?
But, that's the beauty of New York. Anything you are even remotely interested in, you have a better chance of finding like-minded companions than anywhere else.
Take, for instance, the New York Jedi: Light Saber Enthusiasts Collective.
Again, I didn't even know it was a thing, much less a collective (here, my fellow geeks will agree, a collective is more Star Trek borg than Star Wars, but live and let live, I guess).
And on Thursday, March 8, 2012, said collective will be at the Art Students League (W. 57th St. between 8th Avenue and Broadway) at 7 PM, bringing "their extensive experience in martial arts-based stage combat."
League members, students, and friends can draw and otherwise attempt to render the swashbuckling action as trained performers using custom light sabers practice and act out scenes of daring-do.
The cost to sketch the saberists is just $5 per session. Alternatively, you can participate by joining the event as a saberist-in-training ($10 cash at the door, sabers will be provided on a first-come-first-serve basis).
If that's not a New York City deal (odd, intriguing, and cheap!), I don't know what is!
