Moments before he was hit and killed by a train Tuesday, a 51-year-old passenger attempted to help the driver out of their wrecked car, which had stopped on the train tracks after a collision in Doraville.
Mr. Tony Ross Lungaro died in a fiery crash at the scene near the intersection of Amwiler Road and Buford Highway, according to Gwinnett County police.
And investigators have not yet determined if charges should be filed.
Around 4:55 p.m. officers responded to the scene after getting a call about a wreck involving a pickup truck and a train, police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.
Responding officers then discovered that two vehicles were involved in a collision prior to the arrival of the train.
Mr. Lungaro was a passenger in a white 2003 Ford F150 that was traveling south on Buford Highway with Mr. Lorenzo Wilkerson, 40, behind the wheels.
A bronze 2003 Chevrolet Astrovan, driven by Mr. Severin Gluschak was traveling north on Buford Highway and attempted to turn left onto Amwiler Road.
“The Astrovan failed to yield and turned in front of the F150, causing the collision,” Cpl. Smith said. “The F150 came to an uncontrolled stop on the railroad tracks.
It was then that police said Mr. Lungaro got out of the F150 and approached the driver’s side.
“He may have been attempting to assist Wilkerson when the approaching train struck him and the vehicle,” Cpl. Smith said. “Lungaro was killed by the impact.”
Officers arrived on scene two minutes after receiving the call and found the F150 was on fire. Firefighters arrived shortly after and were able to extinguish the blaze.
Mr. Wilkerson was transported to the hospital in serious condition and Mr. Gluschak was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
“No charges have been made at this time, pending the conclusion of the investigation,” Cpl. Smith said.
