Trails of Tidewater

The Virginia Capital Trail leads from downtown Richmond into Virginia's Tidewater region, and Tidewater itself boasts a variety of hiking opportunities, including False Cape State Park.

The Chickahominy Wildlife Management Area is located off Route 5 in Charles City County, about a forty minute-drive to the east from Church Hill. Along the Chickahominy WMA's trails, opportunities exist to see such wildlife as bald eagles. It should be mentioned that hunting is permitted at the Chickahominy WMA; while hiking there during hunting season, one should take safety precautions such as wearing bright orange clothing.

Chippokes Plantation State Park in Surry County is a park with not only hiking trails but historical significance. The park, as its name suggests, is centered around a plantation dating back to the 1600s. The trails of Chippokes Plantation run to the banks of the James River, and through a cypress swamp.

Surry County is also home to the Hog Island Wildlife Management Area. A wide variety of animals and birds can be seen while hiking through the Hog Island WMA. Hunting is permitted at Hog Island, and access to the WMA involves passing through the property of the Surry Nuclear Power Station, which requires a security check.
