So far this summer, the weather here in Virginia has been alternating between oppressive heat and humidity, and stretches of pleasantly mild weather. During the milder periods, there are plenty of places to hike throughout the Old Dominion.
Right here in the Richmond area, a wide variety of trails can be found, as well as trails slightly further to the north in Ashland and Fredericksburg.
The Blue Ridge Mountains are of course home to Shenandoah National Park, and also the Luray Hawksbill Greenway.
In Northern Virginia, there are many trails in Arlington, Fairfax County, and Prince William County, many of which can be reached via the Washington area's public transportation systems. There's also the lengthy Washington & Old Dominion Trail, which stretches from Arlington to western Loudoun County.
False Cape State Park is located entirely within the city limits of Virginia Beach, yet boasts a remarkably unspoiled natural environment, with campsites that can only be reached via a day-long backpacking trip.
In far southwestern Virginia, the unusual Breaks Interstate Park straddles the Virginia/Kentucky state line, and is operated jointly by both states.
