After a couple nights teasing us with promo stills and short bursts of footage, Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Iron Man 3, written and directed by Shane Black, which kicks off Phase II of Marvel’s super-hero film series after The Avengers stomped box office records worldwide. According to the official site:
Marvel's "Iron Man 3" pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
There’s a definite Dark Knight Rises vibe to the trailer. The sight of the hall of armors blowing up while choppers rain fiery hell on Stark’s house are all definitely reminiscent of Bane defeating Batman and detonates his bombs all across Gotham. In the somber-toned spot, Tony (Robert Downey, Jr.) is still recovering from the trauma of the events of Avengers where he was almost stranded in another dimension while riding a nuclear bomb, and he’s coping by working on some new armors and tech. But there’s a threat looming in the form of the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), head of the Ten Rings that imprisoned Tony in the first film, and he’s ready to bring Stark’s world crashing down around his ears.
Iron Man 3 comes to theaters May 3, 2013, released by Paramount Pictures.
