The story of the West Memphis Three has been told many times in multiple documentaries, but their 20-year ordeal is finally being given the narrative treatment thanks to Atom Egoyan. A new trailer has been released for Devil's Knot, a dramatic recreation of the events surrounding a small town's response to the murder of three little boys. That response included a flawed and biased judicial system that put three misfit teens behind bars for a crime they didn't commit.
Despite a cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, Dane DeHaan, Mireille Enos, Amy Ryan, Stephen Moyer, and Alessandro Nivola, response to the film has been lukewarm to say the least. Part of the reason can be seen in this footage which is extremely flat and lacking the power a compelling story such as this should have. It all feels perfunctory, but maybe the performances can save it.
Devil's Knot opens on May 9th, but I'd probably just recommend Peter Jackson's amazing documentary, West of Memphis.
