The trailer for the upcoming Saving Private... errr... Saving Mr. Banks has been released!
The upcoming film stars Tom Hanks as Walt Disney. The film also stars Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers, the writer of the novel, Mary Poppins. The film is directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) and written by Kelly Marcel based on a story by Marcel and Sue Smith.
Here is the synopsis:
Author P.L. Travers travels from London to Hollywood as Walt Disney adapts her novel Mary Poppins for the big screen.
The trailer looks flat-out excellent, punctuated by familiar tunes from the classic 1964 film. Films about "making of" classic films have been a growing trend these days. I'm reminded of last year's Hitchcock (2012), starring Anthony Hopkins, about the "difficult" making of Psycho. This film appears to be following that trend, with an added twist--that Mary Poppins was apparently based on a real person!
Emma Thompson as author P.L. Travers appears to be a logical choice--she did play an English author before in the quirky Stranger Than Fiction (2006). It is a breeze to see Tom Hanks play big roles again, particularly a role that appears to align with his "good guy" persona.
"Mr. Banks" refers to the name of the banker in Mary Poppins (1964) who hires a levitating, umbrella-carrying nanny to babysit his children...to put it simply.
The film opens December 20th, 2013.
