Tragic deaths that rocked 2012: Sandy Hook, Aurora CO, and more

In 2012, the United States were devastated by many tragic deaths and crimes. From mass shootings to sex scandals to “zombie” attacks, our country mourned many innocent children and questioned why.

On Dec. 14, 2012, Adam Lanza committed the second worst school shooting in United States history. Lanza began his murderous spree by shooting his mother, Nancy Lanza in the head four times while she slept.

He then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary school and shot his way into the school. Lanza opened fire on 20 innocent six and seven year-old children and six brave personnel who tried to put themselves between the kids and the shooter.

Yoselyn Ortega was the New York nanny for Marina Krim. Ortega was responsible for the three Krim children, Lucia, 6, Nessie, 3, and Leo, 2.

While Marina Krim was with her daughter, Nessie at swim class, Yoselyn Ortega brutally murdered little Lucia and Leo. She then left their butchered, bloody bodies in the bath tub for their heartbroken mother to find.

After attempting to kill herself, Ortega survived the wounds to her throat. She has pleaded not guilty and has been sent for psychiatric evaluation while awaiting trial for the double murder.

Rudy Eugene’szombie attack” stunned the nation. High on Bath salts, Eugene attacked Ronald Poppo, a homeless man in Miami. When police arrived on scene, they discovered Eugene eating the flesh off of Poppo’s face. When Eugene failed to obey the orders of the police officers, they were forced to shoot. Eugene died at the scene.

Jerry Sandusky, former assistant football coach from Penn State, was found guilty of 45 counts of sexual assault against minors. Sandusky was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison. Jerry Sandusky, 68, has maintained his innocence throughout the scandal and is due back in court on January 10 to appeal his conviction.

Batman shooter, James Eagan Holmes walked into a Century movie theater in Aurora, Colorado for the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises”. Holmes was dressed in tactical clothing and carried tear gas grenades and multiple firearms.

After setting off the tear gas, he fired on the unprotected and innocent movie goers. When the spree was over, 12 people were dead and 58 others were injured. Holmes was arrested outside the movie theater without incident.

Johnny Lewis, star of “Sons of Anarchy”, murdered his landlady, Catherine Davis, 81, and brutally killed her cat. He then climbed up on the roof of their Los Angeles home and fell to his death. While many people speculated that Lewis, a Scientologist was on the street drug, “Smiles” at the time of the murders, the coroner found no trace of it in his system.
