Tragic death along the Pascack Valley Line

Sadly this holiday weekend got off to a tragic start Friday for 350 passengers riding along the Pascack Valley rail line during the Friday holiday rush.

A person was struck at the New Bridge Landing station by a Pearl River bound express train. This incident suspended rail service and activated back up bus service.

This has not been a good year for NJT in terms of rail deaths, with an average close to 2 per month system wide. In addition this is the second incident along the Pascack Valley line this summer.

Sources are not saying as to whether this was an accident or perhaps a suicide. All that is being said is the person was from Teaneck.

Some common advice should be adhered to when it comes to the area's railroads.

* Do not trespass on the tracks. The passenger lines run at high speeds, by the time you see and hear a train it is too late. Also, trespassing is a serious offense.

* Do not walk around crossing gates.

* If you hear a horn/whistle step way back on the platform.

* If someone is hanging around the tracks and seems distraught notify the police.
