Tragedy strikes 'Glee' cast again: Becca Tobin's boyfriend found dead

For the second time in just under one year, tragedy hits close to home with another death associated with the cast from the TV musical comedy-drama series “Glee.” Matt Bendik, a 35-year-old nightclub owner and the real-life boyfriend of “Glee” co-star Becca Tobin, 28, who has portrayed the character of snippy cheerleader Kitty Wilde on the hit series since 2012, was found dead on July 10 by a maid in a Philadelphia hotel room he shared with Tobin. So far, a cause of death has not been released. Another heartbreaking death occurred on July 14, 2013, when fan favorite Cory Monteith, one of the original “Glee” leads, was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room from a heroin and alcohol overdose.

The couple seemed happy Wednesday night. Bendik’s remains were discovered by a maid around 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Bendik and Tobin were in Philly on business, according to USA Today. The couple had been out and about in the City of Brotherly Love on Wednesday night and had returned to their hotel, the Hotel Monaco. Bendik’s body was discovered a little after 1 p.m. on Thursday. There is no indication yet as to Tobin’s whereabouts during the grisly discovery.

“On July 10, 2014, at approximately 1:05 p.m., police responded to Hotel Monaco and housekeeping discovered a white male, 31 years of age, at the location,” police said in a statement. “Medics pronounced him dead at 1:17 p.m., and the cause is undetermined by medical examiners.” ~ Fox News

Before graduating with a business degree from the Cornell Hotel School in Ithaca, New York, in 2005, Bendik worked as a promoter for Hollywood’s legendary Whiskey a Go Go on the Sunset Strip. Bendik was based in his hometown of Los Angeles, according to About MattBendIk.com. The site also listed him as being the current president of Chosen Hospitality LLC, a company specializing “in high-end hospitality development and management.”

Police in Philadelphia said that there were no signs of foul play in connection with Bendik’s death, according to the Daily News. There were also no drugs or paraphernalia found in the Hotel Monaco room that Bendik and Tobin had shared. Reportedly, Bendik and Tobin appeared to be in good spirits following their business obligations in Philly, and were seen out together and with friends on the Wednesday night before Bendik’s death.
