Tradition-bound Galatoire introduces new interactive iPhone application

“The beauty of Galatoire’s," the New Orleans French Quarter restaurant says “is that things never change.” However, it continues to stray away from a few of its century old traditions and to move into modern marketing, this time taking a futuristic leap into cyber space.

Going beyond a website, Galatoire’s has adopted a computer application for free use on iPhones, iPods and iPads that allows users to:

  • Read its menu (including prices)
  • Make reservations
  • Determine what fish are currently fresh
  • Make and read diner comments
  • Buy a Galatoire’s gift card
  • Donate to the Galatoire’s Foundation
  • Find directions to the restaurant.

French Creole Menu

The restaurant still promotes a “French Creole menu so delicious that you can still order from it 105 years after it was first written.”  But Galatoire’s has made some recent changes that would have seemed unthinkable not too long ago.

  • In 1999, the Bourbon Street restaurant broke a 94-year old tradition by taking its first reservations, for seating on its new second floor.
  • In 2005 opened its second restaurant, a bistro, in Baton Rouge
  • In 2006, it did away with the traditional long overnight sidewalk lines for pre Mardi Gras and Christmas tables.  It did so by developing charity auctions to allocate those tables.
  • In 2009 a new partner joined the family that has owned the restaurant for four generations.

Tradition for a Reason

The adoption of the new computer application is the latest of its changes, which some people may seem to be glacially slow in coming.  But Galatoire’s latest slogan is “A Tradition for a Reason,” which may explain its reluctance to change.

The computer application was developed for Galatoires by Touch Studios, a division of Susco Solutions, a New Orleans custom software development firm.
