On Saturday, June 7, Tracy Morgan was in critical condition in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital after the limo bus he was riding in was involved in a dangerous car accident. The limo bus was driving on the New Jersey turnpike when it was rear-ended by a Wal-Mart 18 wheeler. The accident caused a six vehicle crash resulting in one death.
According to Sgt. Gregory Williams, “The limo bus is the only vehicle that overturned. Looks like one of the tractor-trailers may have rear-ended that limo bus, that that’s preliminary at this time.” The one person to have been killed was identified as James McNair, 63. He was a close comedy pal of Morgan’s and was a passenger in the limo bus. Seven other people were hospitalized with injuries three of which were in critical condition.
Morgan had been performing a gig Friday night at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Delaware prior to the crash. The authorities were investigating the crash and had the turnpike closed for over five hours. They do not suspect that alcohol was involved.
Morgan’s rep, Lewis Kay spoke to NBC News and said, “His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care. We don’t anticipate much of a change in his condition today but will provide a further update once more information becomes available.”
Tyrone Gale was the man who was driving the limo bus Morgan was riding in. Gale spoke with ABC News on Sunday and revealed what happened in the horrifying moments after the crash. Gale said, “I climbed around and heard Tracy screaming for help.”
“I climbed up on the body of the limo bus but I couldn’t reach them. I just remember the impact…We didn’t know which way was up, which way was down. I don’t know if we flipped several times or one time. I saw the condition of everybody and I knew it would just make it worse if I tried to pull them up and out of the vehicle.”
Wal-Mart CEO Bill Simon has stated that should the authorities determine that the accident was his driver’s fault they, as a company would take responsibility for the accident. Simon told The New Jersey Ledger, “The facts are continuing to unfold, if it’s determined that our truck caused the accident, Wal-Mart will take full responsibility.”
On Saturday night, the driver of the tractor-trailer, Kevin Roper, 35, turned himself into the authorities and was charged with death by automobile. His bail was set at $50,000. Additionally, he was charged with four counts of assault by automobile.
On Sunday night, Kay said, “While Tracy remains in critical condition; he has been more responsive today, which is an incredibly encouraging sign. He sustained a number of injuries including a broken leg, a broken femur, a broken nose and several broken ribs.”
“He had surgery earlier today on his leg. We expect him to remain in the hospital for several weeks. His family is tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”
