Did you know that excited children can track Santa Claus on Christmas Eve online using NORAD? What is NORAD? NORAD is the North American Aerospace Defense Command, a joint effort between Canada and the United States to keep us safe, so this is very official! NORAD and its predecessor, CONAD, The Continental Air Defense Command, have been tracking Santa's Sleigh for over 50 years.
The NORAD tracking of Santa was started quite by accident in 1955 when an advertisement incorrectly listed Santa's phone number as the number used by the CONAD Commander-in-Chief's hotline! Colonel Harry Shoup was good-natured about it and had his men check the radar for Santa when the children called, and a tradition began.
The NORAD website has Google Earth tracking, information, games, and more to keep restless children busy while they wait for Santa Claus. There is also a link where you can view last year's record of Santa's voyage as he flew around the world on Christmas Eve.
Here is the link: NORAD Santa Tracker Site.
By the way, the visibility in Northeast Tennessee is forecast to be 10 miles on Christmas Eve.
Why not find your Knoxville Social Media Examiner on Facebook and say, "Merry Christmas!"
