From the ashes of the much-beloved art-thrashers Ketman, surf-rockers Trabants have emerged. Named after the famously inept East German auto, (wikipedia: "With its mediocre performance, inefficient two-stroke engine, noxious fumes and production shortages, the Trabant is often cited as an example of the disadvantages of centralized planning; on the other hand, it is regarded with derisive affection as a symbol of the failed former East Germany and of the fall of communism") Trabants bring European and other worldly influences to Dick Dale-style surf instrumentals.
On the tour that served as the basis for the band's new live recording, called An Evening with Trabants - Live at New Alliance, they got to play a show with the legendary Dale himself. There's no higher honor for any band who plays any surf-guitar related material.
The new record features three new studio recordings and 11 songs recorded live on tour. The record release party is tonight at the Plough & Stars in Cambridge. 10:30 PM.
On Saturday, another local band is having a record release party: blues-and-Southern-rock-influenced Coyote Kolb. The Weekly Dig's Peter Legasey wrote "The swirling, infinity-bar blues jam that concluded Kolb’s set was probably the closest I’ll get to seeing a live performance of “Whipping Post” until I’m wealthy enough to afford a ticket to an actual Allman brothers concert."
Their new release, United State, promises more of the dark, bluesy Americana that they offered on their debut, Massachussett, with perhaps a heavier grind-- the Phoenix compared some of it to Alice in Chains' unplugged Jar of Flies recording. The band also plays a cover of Johnny Cash's version of "Ain't No Grave"-- quite an interesting mix of influences and references there between Cash, Alice & Chains and the Allmans.
Coyote Kolb is at Great Scott this Saturday at 9PM, with Tallahassee and Larcenist. $10. 21+.
