Although the much-awaited Toyota Plug-in Prius won't hit dealerships until sometime next year, the automaker will produce another feature for the vehicle that will electrify you.
The Japanese manufacturer will launch its own home electric car charger. Toyota is actually looking to sell at least 50,000 of its Plug-in Prius next year, so why not create a product that could also reel in some extra cash?
The chargers will also be compatible with non-Toyota vehicles and the product will join the ranks of at least tens of thousands of other electric car chargers that will be manufactured for the U.S. this year alone. It seems that every major electric and manufacturing company are anxious to jump into the electric car charging business. Last year, GE launched the WattStation, while others like Silver Spring Networks, Siemens, Better Place, Ecotality, NRG Energy, AeroVironment , Leviton-Coulomb and GridBot just to name a few, are looking to, or have already surged into the electric car charging boom.
To date, there has been no information provided as to whether Toyota plans on marketing its charger to others.
On average, electric car charging supply equipment can run the gamut from $700 to $2,400. Toyota's charger will be priced at up to $2,045, if you include installation, and two charging stations will be available, one mounted to an exterior wall and the other is intended to stay inside a garage.
Reportedly, Toyota is expecting to sell between 20,000 and 30,000 of the electric car chargers in the first year alone.
President Obama has said he wants the country to have one million electric cars on the road by 2015, and one Department of Energy report predicts that there will be 1.2 million in supply by that time.
Time will tell...tick, tock...
