Floor mats in certain Toyota and Lexus vehicles can cause the accelerator pedal to stick, potentially causing a crash, according to the Associated Press. One hundred and two incidents have occured.
The government and Toyota are urging consumers to immediately remove the driver's seat floor mat from the vehicles listed below, until a solution is found.
- 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry,
- 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon,
- 2004-2009 Toyota Prius,
- 2005-2010 Tacoma,
- 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra,
- 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and
- 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.
Toyota is still trying to work out a solution with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Owners of the recalled vehicles may be contacted with instructions as early as next week. Toyota service departments usually fix the recalled vehicles at no cost to the customer.
On the East End, Riverhead Toyota handles recalls, maintenance and repairs and it gets mostly high ratings. Excellent service is reflected in the availability of loaner cars (if the appointment is made far enough in advance,) and the fact that the spacious waiting room is equipped with wireless internet for those who choose to bring a laptop and wait during their appointments. (There's only one plug in the room though, so make sure that the battery is charged.)
The service is usually thorough, aside from the problems that can occur when the car that has been malfunctioning inevitably performs beautifully for the service personnel. For recurring problems, service personnel may ask the customer to leave the vehicle so the mechanic can drive it home in an attempt to diagnose the problem.
Making an appointment is sometimes difficult, because the telephone answering system's "make a service appointment" often leads to voicemail, and call backs don't always come. It's better to choose the option to speak to a service representative.
Riverhead Toyota is at 1655 Old Country Road in Riverhead. Their phone # is (631) 727-7722. For information about the recall people can call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's hotline at 888-327-4236, Toyota at 800-331-4331 or Lexus at 800-255-3987 for more information.
