Give it up for Disney and Pixar. The summer's best film, 'Toy Story 3,' has earned $1 billion dollars at the global box office. Ka-ching to infinity and beyond!
In two months, "Toy Story 3" became the most successful animated film in movie history. Now, Disney and Pixar have confirmed that the blockbuster has earned the unique distinction of having earned $1 billion at the global box office. Already the 7th biggest motion picture in industry history, Disney is now the first studio to ever release back-to-back billion dollar hits in a single year. (Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" was the first, which ranks as the the 5th biggest title in global box office history with $1.0243 billion worldwide.)
And because Hollywood bloggers love to point this out, yes, both films were 3D and able to charge higher ticket prices. But that doesn't negate the impact "Toy Story 3" has had on audiences around the world during a challenging film season for the majors.
“It’s been an incredible year as we saw the Pixar team bring Buzz and Woody back to the big screen and watched Tim Burton’s vision for Alice in Wonderland take the world by storm,” said Rich Ross, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios in a just-released statement from the studio. “These box office triumphs prove that creative storytelling brought to life by imaginative, inspired and talented professionals is something audiences respond to the world over.”
"Toy Story 3" currently ranks as the #7 film in global box office history and domestically ranks #9 with $404.6 million in receipts to date. Still playing at selected theaters, the Blu-ray and DVD release has been announced for November 2, 2010.
