Townley, Gallagher incident leads to punch in Iowa

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Spencer Gallagher took it on the chin after the American Ethanol 200 at Iowa Speedway in Newton on Friday night. Actually it was near the chin, and the "it" was a punch from fellow-driver John Wes Townley after the race.

The two drivers made contact late in the race, even though they weren't racing each other for position. At the time of the incident, Gallagher was one lap down, while Townley was multiple laps down. The incident between turns one and two resulted in a cut tire on Townley's Athenian Motorsports truck. Townley previously drove for Wauters Motorsports. After the incident, Gallagher finished just outside the top-10 in 11th position, while Townley ended up 22nd.

Gallagher admitted blame for the incident and claimed after the race that he walked over to Townley on pit road to apologize. After the punch was throwned, Townley was called to the NASCAR hauler to discuss the altercation with NASCAR officials. After the meeting, Townley was the one apologizing.

“I lost it a little bit. I admit that,” Townley said after his meeting with NASCAR officials. “Me and him have history from last year. He doored us (in a previous race in which both competed) and it ended up taking the win from us. Now tonight, he doored us in the left rear and subsequently caused the tire to go down. When that happened, I came down pit road and asked if the left rear was done because of that. When I found out, I went berserk on him. I’ve never been that mad before and I don’t know what came over me. I guess it was just two strikes and he was out. I was tired of it.”

Afterward, the two drivers shook hands in the garage. The Camping World Truck Series is off next weekend, but Townley and Gallagher are both entered in the ARCA Racing Series event at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday. The Camping World Truck Series returns to action July 23 for a mid-week dirt-track race at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
