Townley arrested, suspended for DUI

John Wes Townley was suspended by RAB Racing after being arrested for DUI early Friday in his home state of Georgia soon after crashing his car into a pole.

"Obviously, this is an unfortunate situation," RAB Racing owner Robby Benton said. "However, we have to react to the severity of the incident accordingly. His actions do not reflect those of RAB Racing, nor the sponsors associated with the team."

According to a statement released from the RAB organization on Friday, Townley will be suspended indefinitely.

Townley was to compete in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for RAB Racing in 2012. It would have marked a return to NASCAR national level competition for the driver who somewhat mysteriously disappeared from the NASCAR scene during the 2010 season.

Townley started that year driving a Nationwide Series entry for Richard Childress Racing. He lost that ride after five races, but he returned to Nationwide competition later in the season to drive for RAB Racing, the team he left to head to RCR. Townley left RAB Racing before the end of the 2010 season.

It was his second alcohol related offense, as Townley was cited for underage possession of alcohol in Las Vegas in 2010.

"John Wes has accepted full responsibility and will take the necessary personal steps in order to correct his actions, among other internal sanctions," Benton said. "We stand by John Wes and will welcome him back to the team at the appropriate time."
