A town bans bottled water following a three-year long campaign put in place to reduce the amount of waste and to boost tap water use. The town, which is Concord, Massachusetts, has now banned all sales of water bottles less than one liter, reports the Daily Mail on Jan. 2.
The ban started Tuesday after a town meeting vote, and stores that fail to comply will be fined $50. First time offenders get a warning and the only exemptions that are allowed are emergency situations.
The ban made history because Concord is one of the first communities in the US to implement the law. However, and not surprisingly, many businesses were not too fond of the ban and opposed it with the argument saying it restricts freedom of choice.
After the ban, ban campaign leader Jean Hill stated to the NY Times:
"What I'm trying to do with this bylaw is to increase the barriers to buying single-serve bottled water."
In order to help people change, you need to put policies in place that steer them away from buying bottled water and toward considering the many other good alternatives."
Although the town bans bottled water, residents say its pointless because they can simply go down the road if they wish to buy small water bottles.
