Tower melts car: The Walkie Talkie building in London is well-known for its unique size and shape, but the 37-story tower in London’s financial district is now making headlines for a light beam it cast that’s hot enough to melt parked cars. The owners of the Walkie Talkie building in the city are working with police to investigate what can be done to remove the intense light beam’s damaging effects on automobiles and people alike, Bloomberg reports this Tuesday, Sept. 3.
The tower that nearly melted a car spurred the Land Securities Group Plc of London as well as the Canary Wharf Group to look into the strange incident. They have since cooperated with City of London officials to block several parking spaces around the Walkie Talkie building on 20 Fenchurch Street that have been said to be affected by the heat ray. It is reported that the sheer glare and focus of light from the sun reflecting off the skyscraper’s tapering own design has been reported to melt some vehicle parts if they remain in the parking spots too long.
“We are taking the issue of light reflecting from 20 Fenchurch Street seriously and are looking into the matter as a priority,” said an official from the examination group. The companies are currently said to be “consulting with local businesses and the City to address the issue in the short term while also evaluating longer-term solutions to ensure the issue cannot recur.”
The intensity and heat level of the light beam cast by the Walkie Talkie building depends on both the clarity of the skies and the sun’s time of elevation. At this time of year, the tower’s light is said to pose a threat for just under two hours during these early fall months. Modeling techniques suggest that the parking spots will need to be vacated for at least two weeks before the light beam loses its ability to literally melt cars in those spots.
One witness said that accidentally walking through the light beam once was like being “in a wall of heat … I hope it hasn’t damaged my eyes.”
Investigations into how to possibly handle the situation surrounding the Walkie Talkie building are already underway.
