Tournament of Roses opens Wrigley Mansion for free tours in 2014

Ada Wrigley loved the Rose Parade. She used to watch it from her bedroom window in her Pasadena mansion, and after death in 1958, the William Wrigley, Jr. family presented the property to the City of Pasadena for use as the headquarters of the Tournament of Roses Association. The Association puts on the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena.

The Tournament offers free docent-led tours every Thursday between Feb. 6 and Aug. 28, 2014, promptly at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. The house, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is located at 391 S. Orange Grove, between Arbor and Lockehaven streets. Visitors can park on the street and meet on the porch. Reservations are not necessary for parties of less than 15 people. Call (626) 449-4100 for reservations or questions.

The tours present Tournament history and showcase the interior of the house, which features richly paneled rooms, inlaid marble floor and an ornate molded plaster ceiling, a design element that made architect G. Lawrence Stimson famous. Visitors will walk through rooms set aside for the Grand Marshals, Royal Court, and Rose Bowl Game. The Wrigley Gardens, 4 ½ acres of expansive lawns and more than 1,500 varieties of roses, camellias and annuals, are open to the public throughout most of the year. The Centennial Rose Garden features the All-America Rose Selections award-winning Tournament of Roses rose developed especially for the Tournament of Roses centennial.
