A tourist distracted by Facebook fell off a pier in Australia. On Dec. 18, MSN News reported that a woman was so focused on her phone that she walked right off the end of the pier and plummeted into the cool water below. The woman was still holding her phone when she was rescued.
"She was still out in the water lying on her back in a floating position because she told us later that she couldn't swim. She still had her mobile phone in her hand and initially she apologized and said sorry," said Senior Constable Dean Kelly of the state water police.
The tourist was browsing Facebook when the pier ended and she took one step too far. Fortunately the woman didn't die and she was able to be rescued shortly after her fall. According to police, a witness called for help and the woman was about 65 feet away from the end of the pier by the time they got to her.
"With Facebook, or social media in general as far as we're concerned, if you're anywhere near the water just pay attention, especially if you can't swim," Kelly added. Obviously people get distracted very easily with social media -- and walking right off the end of a pier is pretty serious.
The tourist who browsed Facebook while walking the pier likely won't make that mistake again. Walking while focusing on your phone is hardly ever a good idea... and now you see what can happen if you're distracted by status updates and pictures of friends' babies.
