March 5: The Captain Nathaniel Mills Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host an application workshop from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. in the conference room of the North Richland Hills Library, 9015 Grand Ave., North Richland Hills, Texas 76180. The museum focus is the military as it pertains to Texas veterans. The museum presents military artifacts and the stories about them in order to educate the public. Adult admission is $6, students ages 7-12 are $3 and children 6 and under are free with adult admission. This is the largest Civil War museum west of the Mississippi. March 7: The Mid-Cities Genealogical Society meets the first Thursday of each month at the Euless Public Library, 201 N. Ector, Euless. Visitors are welcome. 6:30 p.m. – Social and 7p.m. – General meeting. This month, Bernard N. Meisner will speak on “Mining the Gems in a Civil War Pension File.” What originally began as a limited regime of protections for soldiers, widows, and orphans, eventually morphed into a system of old age pensions for almost one third of the elderly population. Former Mid-Cities President Bernard Meisner will discuss his trip to the National Archives in Washington, D.C., the information he found in the Civil War pension file of his great, great uncle, John Fierst, and what genealogists might expect to find in the pension files of their ancestors.
March 9: Visit Heritage Park, 201 Cullum Drive in Euless. Free tours second Saturday of every month from 1-5 p.m. Group tours can be scheduled on a different day depending on staff availability. Tour the Fuller House, the first brick home in Euless which is now a museum; the Himes Log House, built in the 1850s; and the McCormick Barn, built in 1919. Through April 30, 2013: HOGAR de Dallas, a Spanish genealogical organization, will award one scholarship of $1,000 to a high school graduating senior who submits a pedigree chart and essay that follows the assigned criteria. Essay will be published in HOGAR journal.
