New Belgium Brewery’s annual bike parade and concert event Tour De Fat, will once again come through Denver this weekend. Saturday morning will see hundreds of bicyclists in crazy costumes ride throughout the City Park and Park Hill Neighborhoods in a massive bicycle parade. Once the parade ends, City Park will play host to a series of musical acts and contests. One highlight of the event is the “Car for Bike Trade”, in which a person will hand over their car keys and commit to going car-free for one year. In return they’ll get a voucher for a brand new bike and their car will be auctioned for charity. Although admission to the event and to participate in the bike parade is free, proceeds from beer sales and merchandise will go to local bicycle-related non-profits focused on making each host city more bike-friendly.

New Belgium’s love for biking goes beyond this annual festival. In 1989, brewery co-founder Jeff Lebesch went on a biking tour throughout European villages known for their beers. In 1991 he and his wife Kim Jordan founded New Belgium Brewery and released their flagship beer “Fat Tire”, which was named in honor of Jeff’s bike ride. The brewery would become the first in America to release Belgian-style beers brewed in America. Since opening, they have become the 3rd largest craft brewery in America behind Boston Beer Company and Sierra Nevada. In 2012, New Belgium’s Employee Stock Ownership purchased the balance of the brewery’s shares making it an employee owned company.

This year’s Tour De Fat has 10 city stops and will officially end on October 4th in Tempe, AZ. Here is the official line-up for Satuday’s stop in Denver: For more information on New Belgium or the Tour De Fat please visit the event's official site.
