One woman is dead and 20 passenger injured when a casino tour bus crashed Thursday afternoon reported the Union Tribune San Diego on December 19, 2013.
Tayde Murguia, 64, of Van Nuys was a passenger on a chartered tour bus from Los Angeles headed to Valley View casino in North San Diego County. California Highway Patrol Officer, Jim Bettencourt stated the tour bus crashed on Interstate 15 near Bonsall around 2:30 p.m.
The bus driver was traveling in the slow lane at 55 mph when the bus began to fishtail. The bus overturned when the driver attempted to get control of the vehicle.
"He lost control a little bit, tried to overcorrect," Bettencourt said.
The driver suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash and was taken to the hospital. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have played a role in the crash stated Bettencourt.
Bettencourt acknowledged that the rain may have contributed to the driver’s inability to regain control of the bus.
Murguia had been thrown through a window and was trapped under the bus for several hours after the accident occurred.
Raymond Guacema along with his wife and sister-in-law were passengers on the bus. Guacema and his wife were not injured but his sister-in-law was hospitalized.
“It was scary because I saw the bus swerve and I saw a deep cliff,” he said.
Valley View casino’s vice president of security and transportation, Boyd Long issued a statement.
“We want to express our condolences to the families of the injured and the deceased,” he said.
When Long learned of the crash, he drove to the scene with a copy of the passenger manifest.
“We just wanted to try and help CHP in any way we could,” he said.
A spokesman for the tour bus company said the driver has worked for them for four years and has been a bus driver for 25 years without incident.
