Toula on the set of "Public Enemies" with Stephen K. Spencer
There’s an old adage: “Never act with children or animals.” So, what was Johnny Depp thinking? He must have known that that a 5-year-old border collie rescue named Toula would steal the show.
It all began in 2007. Christine Mahaney, Toula’s owner and trainer was working part-time as a dog-trainer, and part-time as a paralegal. “… I had some friends tell me, “hey – Petco’s doing this competition. [“America’s Most Talented Pet”] You should do it!”
“I went down to the store and stayed up till 3 in the morning getting my props ready – I didn’t even know what I was doing or what order, which probably worked better for Toula and I, because you have to just roll with it when you work with dogs.
“We went in there – won first place, and that’s what got us down to the Petco competition, and then we won the top 12 – and then we won. So – it was really from the Petco competition that got us out there.”
Of course, Toula already had everything she needed to ‘make it’ – good looks and more than 45 distinct behaviors including just about every trick and behavior you can think of. Sneeze, and she’ll get you a tissue. Are you thirsty? Toula will bring you a drink out of the cooler. Yawn? She even will bring you a pillow. Yes, she is the perfect host, but could she play a Midwestern lodge owner’s dog who ruined the FBI’s attempt at a surprise raid by barking and thus alerting the gangsters hiding within? In “Public Enemies,” Toula’s most demanding behavior seems as simple as walking out a door with her co-star. But that was someone she had meet only 2 hours before -- and by exiting the lodge, she was walking, off-leash, away from her owner and handler as cars are pulling in, with cameras overhead and over 100 strangers lurking around in the dark.
