Margaret is thin. She is tall and thin. She was on the debate team in college. Dan has broad shoulders. He is stocky in build. He was on his college football team.
A plum job has become available and both have applied. The job requires top negotiation skills and an ability to stand firm with strong-willed customers who want something for nothing. The job demands that salespeople are held accountable to say “no” when the sales team is ready to give customers whatever, so they can get a win at any cost.
The CEO has to make a decision and it could be from the toss of a coin. Margaret and Dan could both do the job equally well.
Dan got the job.
What was the defining reason he came out in first place?
Here is what the boss told me in private: “The job calls for someone who is tough and can stand steady through difficult negotiations. I believe men are tougher than women and besides, Dan looks the part with his rugged physique. I certainly will not say this in public, yet that was the deciding factor.”
Question: Is the CEO a man or a woman?
Tune in tomorrow for the answer and what happened next.
