Modern medicine is increasingly embracing the powerful correlation between physical and mental health, otherwise known as the mind/body connection. Your mental state is certainly capable of influencing your physical health, since the hormones produced during times of elevated stress can increase your risk factors for disease and lower your immune system. So, too, can your physical health be a source of stress, requiring you to find coping mechanisms for dealing with physical problems. Achieving Total Body Happiness means finding practical ways to optimize the health of body and mind. Three crucial aspects to this are:
- A balanced diet, rich in nutrients
- Regular fresh air, sunshine, and exercise
- Relaxation and coping strategies that increase your resiliency to stressful situations
Being aware of these three daily goals puts you in a state of increased mindfulness, or awareness of the present moment. Reading this article is an opportunity for a deep breath, which is a natural stress reliever. Try this breathing exercise:
- Inhale slowly for 5 seconds, letting the belly expand.
- Hold the breath for 5 seconds.
- Slowly exhale for 10 seconds.
Breathing exercises, sometimes known as "relaxation minis" can reduce your stress, thus increasing your overall health and well-being.
What are you doing to optimize your Total Body Happiness? What questions do you have about how to achieve it? I've started a blog about my quest to increase my Total Body Happiness. Check it out at totalbodyhappiness.blogspot.com.
One piece of advice I'm trying to follow is to not take life too seriously. We all have obligations and commitments, difficult relationships, problems, and sources of stress, but what matters most is your perception of your life. Just by choosing to focus on the positive aspects of your life, your relationships, and even your health and you will be a making a positive impact on your health.
