It has been reported by the North Jersey Masters Club that Toshiko d'Elia of Ridgewood, N.J. has passed away at the age of 84..

Toshiko was born Toshiko Kishimoto on January 2, 1930 in Kyoto, Japan. She along with her husband who passed away several years ago were the founding members of the North Jersey Masters Club.

She took up running later in life and completed many local and international events where she was a standout performer and regular age group top finisher. She ran her first marathon in 1976 at the Shore Athletic Club’s Jersey Shore Marathon. She had intended to only run the half marathon but kept on going and completed the full marathon in a time of 3:25.

She was the first 50 year old woman to run under 3 hours for the marathon. Her motto documented in a Japanese news article was, “run to live, not live to run.”

Toshiko kept competing into her 80’s when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The running world will miss a true icon of running.
