A Tornado Warning has been issued for east central Volusia County, including South Daytona, Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach until 4:15 Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, Florida. Forecasters said they had detected a severe thunderstorm at 3:42 p.m. “…capable of producing a tornado near New Smyrna Beach Airport and Port Orange…moving east northeast at 25 mph.” Other locations included in the warning were Harbor Oaks and Ponce Inlet, though the warning was not limited to these areas.

A Tornado Warning is also in effect until 5:15 p.m. Sunday for southeastern Volusia County. Forecasters said the warning included the cities of Oak Hill, Edgewater, Deltona and DeBary.

Forecasters said to look for a strong building on the lowest floor for protection, or an interior room like a bathroom or closet. They also warned to keep away from windows, to get under a workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture, and to use blankets or pillows to shield your body. They also said to evacuate “…mobile homes or vehicles for more substantial shelter.”

Storms moved through northern areas of Volusia County earlier in the afternoon also, stopping the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach.
