Tornado Safety

We’ve seen the horrible images coming out of Joplin. With over 130 people dead, people are starting to take a serious look at tornado safety. We all  heard the sirens...did you know what to do? The following is a list of safety tips from local experts and the Red Cross.

If you’re in a home or small building, the safest places are:

-The basement

-Under heavy work tables, maybe even your dining room table

-A small windowless room (maybe your bathroom or a closet). The bathtub is anchored to the floor, which will give you extra protection.

If you’re in a school:

-Stay away from large windows. Move into interior rooms and crouch under a desk

If you are in a car:

-Do NOT try to drive away from the tornado. They move extremely fast and do not often follow exact patterns. STOP the car and head for a low-lying ditch.

If you are in a high rise:

-avoid large glass windows. Head for a small interior room

-Just like a fire, do NOT take the elevator. Take the stairs…they may even offer protection.

The Red Cross suggests that you assemble a "disaster supplies kit" that you keep in your shelter area. It should contain:

  • A battery powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.
  • Bottled water.
  • Sturdy shoes and work gloves.
  • Written instructions on how to turn off your homes utilities.
  • Warm blankets and water-proof clothing.
