One of the most common beauty complaints is having dark circles under the eyes that make a person look tired, stressed, or even ill. There are different products out on the market today that you can purchase, but some of them are quite expensive or they are packaged in such small containers that you may end up making continuous purchases with poor results from high-priced and over-marketed products anyways. Here are a couple of favorite home remedies and tips for brighter looking eyes in no time at all.

Natural ingredients for instant relief

Take a look in your refrigerator or cupboard. I guarantee that you have some ingredients that can used to help reduce puffy eyes and dark circles. Take fruit and vegetables for example. The following foods can be sliced or the juice can be soaked in cotton balls and placed on the eyes for instant relief.

• Cucumber
• Potato
• Tomato
• Lemon
• Apple

Also consider purchasing tonics and oils at a local organic store such as rose water or almond oil for soft skin.

The benefits of water and tea

Growing up, you probably heard grownups say plenty of times that you should drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Well, they were very right about drinking enough water when it comes to having healthy skin. You might not necessarily need to drink 8 glasses of water like the old wives’ tale suggests, but you should try to drink enough of it throughout the day. Especially if you tend to drink a lot of caffeinated or sugary drinks like coffee, tea, and soda. For every cup of coffee/tea or glass of soda you drink, you should also drink two glasses of water to balance out the caffeine and sugar intake. Consider dipping a cotton ball in cold water or other substitutes such as a cold spoon that has been in the freezer for a couple of minutes or bag of ice cubes works well too.

Get plenty of sleep at night

Sometimes you have dark eye circles because you actually are tired from lack of proper sleep and you need some good shut eye. Here’s some advice to getting a good night’s sleep if you’re not getting any lately. To begin, make sure your room is dark enough at night to keep out any extra light coming from streetlamps by investing in some new curtains or an eye mask. Try to do something you find relaxing whether it’s listening to music, reading a book, taking a bath, or light stretching with a quick yoga session. Make sure your mattress and pillow are both comfortable. If you wake up with a stiff neck and/or back, it might be time to replace them. Avoid heavy foods at night and stick with light carbs such as bread, protein like cheese, or once again-a tall glass of water.

Hide dark eye circles and enhance your eyes with makeup

Sometimes it’s impossible to fully hide your dark eye circles because of inherited genetics, broken blood vessels, hyperpigmentation, or lack of iron and vitamin E. If you lack vitamin E, you can break VE capsules, place it under the eyes, and rinse after 10 minutes. On the other hand, there are a couple of makeup tricks to hide dark eye circles and enhance your eyes with makeup.

Begin by applying some under eye concealer whether it’s a cream or a liquid gel as long as it matches your skin tone. For eye shadow, either apply the same the concealer on your eyelid or brush on a light eye shadow that matches your skin tone or is a shade lighter. Once you have set the base, apply an eye shadows that can bring out your eye color such as the following shades:

• Blue eyes: gray, brown, light blue, gold, bronze, or peach
• Green eyes: sepia, rust, purple, pink
• Hazel eyes: gray, dusty pink, burgundy, violet, yellow-brown, bold gold
• Brown eyes: bronze, purple, navy, teal, green

Finish off your look with eye liner in one of the colors mentioned before and if you wish, add some white eye liner to the inside corner of your eyes to bring out the white of your eyes. Wear whatever color of mascara you like most, but blue can make you look extra awake.
So remember to drink plenty of water, try some natural solutions, or have fun a with a new makeup look. When in doubt, a nap or a couple of more hours of sleep at night might be the best thing you can do for yourself and those dark eye circles.
