Top ten stars of 2011

One of the perks of reporting on the performing arts is the chance to interview entertainers, both established and up-and-coming, prior to their local appearances.

Following is a list of some of the performers, in alphabetical order, who generously shared their time with Examiner.com during 2011.

1. Emily Behny

Behny, a 2010 Ball State graduate, starred as Belle in the national touring company (Broadway in Indianapolis series) production of Beauty and the Beast, which played Oct. 11-16 at Clowes Memorial Hall.

2. Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway

The Callaway sisters both have performed on Broadway and in concerts, and they also are recording artists. The duo co-hosted this year’s Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Yuletide Celebration, which ran Dec. 2-23 at Hilbert Circle Theatre.

3. Peter Deiwick

Deiwick, a Toronto native, starred as Stacey Jaxx in the national tour (Broadway in Indianapolis series) of Rock of Ages at Clowes Memorial Hall, April 12-17.

4. Tony DeSare

DeSare, a crooner who often is compared to Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jr., but definitely has a style all his own, appeared at the Cabaret at the Columbia, Sept. 17-18.  

5. Candy Dulfer

Dulfer, a renowned Dutch saxophonist, appeared with David Sanborn at Carmel’s Palladium on May 20.

6. k. d. Lang

Acclaimed singer, musician and recording artist, as well as one of Canada’s most famous exports, Lang appeared with her band, Siss Boom Bang, at Carmel’s Palladium on June 22.

7. Sylvia McNair

Opera star and IU  faculty member McNair performed in a Pops Series concert with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at Hilbert Circle Theatre on June 11.

8. David Hyde Pierce

Best known for his role as Niles Crane in Frasier, Pierce, who has since made his mark on Broadway, appeared with Michael Feinstein at the grand opening of the Tarkington Theatre at Carmel's Center for the Performing Arts on Aug. 6.

9. Chris Ryan Grant

Grant, a 2005 graduate of the University of Evansville, starred as Sam Phillips in the national tour (Broadway in Indianapolis series) of Million Dollar Quartet at the Murat Theatre at the Old National Centre, which ran Dec. 13-18.

10. Martin Short

Short, a film and television star best known for his stint on Saturday Night Live, brought many of his well-known characters to Carmel’s Palladium on Aug. 27.
