We think you're near Los Angeles

Top ten sports cities of the past decade (2000-2010): Where does Detroit rank?

Looking back at the decade that 2000-2010 in terms of sports, we saw mini dynasties from the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Lakers and master consistency from the Detroit Red Wings. Taking that into account, let’s examine which T.V. market had the most to celebrate in last decade in terms of pro sports.

10. Philadelphia

The fans in Philadelphia finally got to celebrate a world championship in 2009 when the Phillies won the World Series. In addition, they have enjoyed five conference/league championships courtesy of two from the Phillies (2008 and 2009) and one each from the Flyers (2010), 76ers (2001) and Eagles (2004) in the last decade.

9. Miami

South Beach saw two world championships come their way in the past decade as the Heat (2006) and Marlins (2003) went all the way.  The sad part is that those two seasons are the only two in which Miami won a league/conference championship.

8. Tampa Bay

The city of Tampa finally got to find out how much fun it is to have professional sports teams. Two world championships were won as the Buccaneers (2002) and Lightning (2005) got the job done. In addition, the Bucs, Lightning and Rays (2008) brought home a league/conference championship.

7. Chicago

The Windy City has had better decades but two world championships (Blackhawks in 2010 and White Sox in 2005) in the last decade is nothing to sneeze at. In addition, the city saw three conference/league championships from the Hawks (2010), Chi-Sox(2005)  and Bears( 2006) in the past ten years.

6. San Antonio

In a market with just one professional sports team, this spot on the list is even more impressive. Three world and conference championships later from the Spurs in 2003, 2005 and 2007 and San Antonio finds themselves in the middle of the pack.

5. Pittsburgh

The “steel city” has enjoyed all the championship champagne in the second half of the decade. A total of three world championships (Steelers in 2005 and 2008 and Penguins in 2009) and five conference/league championships (Steelers in 2005, 2008 and 2010, Pens in 2008 and 2009) is admirable for a city with only three pro teams.

4. Detroit

The Motor City has had to suffer through depressing Lions football for over 50 years now but overall still had a decade to remember. Three world championships (Red Wings in 2002 and 2008, Pistons in 2004) and six conference/league championships (Wings in 2002, 2008 and 2009, Pistons in 2004 and 2005, Tigers in 2006) get my hometown the No. four spot in this list.

3. Boston

It has been a tremendous decade up in Bean-town. Six world championships coming from the Patriots (2001, 2003 and 2004), Red Sox (2004 and 2007) and Celtics (2008) have come in the last ten years. The same three teams combined for eight conference/league championships (Pats in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2007, the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007 and the Celtics in 2008 and 2010) in the same time span.

2. New York/New Jersey

The Big Apple has won five championships in the past ten years as the Yankees (2000 and 2009); Devils (2000 and 2003) and Giants (2007) have won the ultimate prize. In addition, the city has celebrated 12 conference/league championships as the Yankees (2000, 2001, 2003 and 2009), Devils (2003, 2001 and 2000), Giants (2000 and 2007); Nets (2002 and 2003) and Mets (2000) have chipped as well.

1.       Los Angeles/Anaheim

The number one spot goes to LA LA Land. An amazing seven world championships (Lakers in 2010, 2009, 2002, 2001 and 2000, Ducks in 2007 and Angels in 2002) along with ten conference championships complied by the Lakers (2010, 2009, 2008, 2004, 2002, 2001, 2000), Ducks (2003 and 2007) and Angels (2002) catapult Los Angeles to the best sports market in the last decade.

Wes Sims has spent his entire time on this planet living in Metro Detroit while cheering on the Pistons, Lions, Red Wings, Tigers, Wolverines and the Spartans (when they're not playing U-M). The college grad has attended some of the biggest moments in recent Detroit sports history, but none more...
