Given that February is Library Lover’s Month, this post is to honor our librarians, and in doing so, I polled a number of them, along with children and teachers in order to compile a list of the top ten most requested books for 2011.
The age group is 9-12. This is what I learned.
1) The Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine
2) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
3) The Dork Diary series by Rachel Renee Russell
4) The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
5) The Warrior series by Erin Hunter
6) Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney
7) The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordon
8) A-Z Mysteries by Ron Roy
9) Baily School Kids by Debbi Dadey and Marcia Jones
10)The Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner
I am not the least bit surprised Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Warriors made the cut as they are all spread all over the school seemingly in every cubby. Knowing this kind of information can help guide parents when it comes to looking for books for your children as I would put all of these in the pre-approved category. Librarians are a treasure. They seem to they know everything. They often observe what kids are reading most intensely and in a way, have their finger on the pulse better than anyone.
Librarians, given book stores are disappearing so rapidly, are one of our best resources. Kids love libraries. I will leave you with this great blog. Take them often and you will be surprise how to see what your kids are responding to.
