Halloween is just a few weeks away. Do you have your costume yet? If you're anything like me, then you've probably procrastinated and waited until the last minute to find the perfect Halloween costume. Have you found it yet? Me neither. Finding a cool Halloween costume is a task in itself. But it's easier now than it was back when I was a kid.
Growing up as a child of the '80s my mom would make my Halloween costume for me. She was really great at making costumes. She probably could've been a costume seamstress for any of the Hollywood movie studios had she wanted to be. She was so good that all of the kids in the neighborhood and my cousins would ask her to make their costumes for them as well. One Halloween I was Paul Stanley from KISS. Then another year I was Billy Idol with leather vest to boot right outta of his "Dancing With Myself" music video. Even before that, she had made me the most amazing full body Star Wars Chewbacca costume! I really felt like a Wookie, but because I was only three foot tall at the time I was destined to be labeled, sadly, only a Ewok.
Halloween costumes have come a long way since those days. It wasn't so easy back then to find cool costumes. You either had to make it yourself or you had to suffer a costume in a box which included a plastic mask likeness and a vinyl throw over that featured a crude printed image on it. That was your costume then, but with the internet now someone looking for a epic costume can find one with just the click of a mouse.
For every person this year that may just want to dress up like a pirate or a zombie, there are also those of us like me for example that love to dress up as our favorite television or movie characters. But where do we fine the perfect costume? It's not like I can go to my local Halloween retail store and say "I'd like to be Jack Burton from Big Trouble In Little China this year. What can you do for me?" If I said that, I'd be shown the Michael Myers masks and the Austin Powers full dress-up swinger's suit and be sent on my way. What's a movie fan to do this Halloween?
Some people might already be ready-to-go with their costumes because they're active in "Cosplay" or because they frequent comic con each year, but what about those of us who just wanna go wild and pretend that we are "Sheldon" from The Big Bang Theory for one night out of the year?
If I want to be Sheldon what do I do? Do I look on an internet message board for a costume pattern to make my own costume? Do I re-watch episodes of The Big Bang Theory over and over hitting the pause button on my DVD remote while I try to commit to memory every single shirt that Sheldon and the guys wear each week in an attempt to find it at my local comic book store? What about those people out there that are fans of shows like Eastbound & Down or Family Guy, South Park, Saved By The Bell or The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? Are there places out there that sell costumes from our favorite television and movie series alone? If you've asked yourselves any of these questions then more than likely you've went looking for them on the internet and found what you were looking for.
