Top ten highest domestic grossing films of all time movie locations

#1 on the top ten highest domestic grossing films of all time list is James Cameron's Titanic

time list (movie poster from Wikipedia)

It’s beginning to look like Avatar may make it on to the “top ten highest domestic grossing films of all time” list.  A recently released report estimates its box office receipts so far to be $212M.  If correct, that means it is currently at position #85, and it's only just begun!

For your reference, here are the current top ten highest grossing films of all time (with their box office totals shown in parentheses) and a bit about their movie locations:

Titanic ($600M) – This movie was filmed in various locations stretching from Canada to Mexico, but the engine room scenes were created on the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien, which is a San Francisco tourist attraction.

Dark Knight ($533M) – Filmed primarily in Chicago, the Sears Tower (now known as the Willis Tower) was one of the city’s many stunning buildings used in the movie.

Star Wars ($461M) – Several locations in Tunisia were used to achieve this movie’s “other-worldly” effects, but some scenes were shot closer to home in Death Valley National Park.

Shrek 2 ($441M) – This movie did not have a filming location, per se, since it was an animated film.

E.T. ($435M) – Eliot’s house (seen at the 1:20 mark in the video below) is a real home at the end of a cul-de-sac in a residential neighborhood in the Tujunga Valley, which is near Los Angeles.  The home’s address is 7121 Lonzo Street, Tujunga, CA.

Star Wars: Episode I ($431M) – Tunisia played the starring movie location role for this Star Wars film, as well, but the Royal Palace of Caserta in Campania, Italy served as the film’s Naboo Royal Palace.  Take a tour of the palace:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($423M) – As you’d expect, several filming locations were used for this movie, one of which was the stunning nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the Lesser Antilles chain of islands.

Spider-Man ($403M) – The field trip scene where Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is bitten by a radioative spider was shot in the eastern rotunda of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen ($402M) – This film used California’s Edwards Air Force Base as a movie location (where, incidently, footage for the upcoming Ironman II was shot in May of this year).

Star Wars: Episode III ($380M) – Production for this film went back to Tunisia, where the Chott el Djerid in Nefta again served as the Lars family homestead.

Only time will tell, of course, if Avatar will eventually displace Titanic on this list, but it's quite possible.  What a coup it would be for James Cameron if his films were to hold the top two positions on the “top ten highest domestic grossing films of all time” list!

Cool article. It's always fun to know the top anything and this was particularly fascinating.

BTW, I always wonder if "they" adjust for inflation.

There are some interesting substitutions for far away locatgions, especially years ago when travel to locations was harder.
