Top ten high growth, high pay jobs in Minnesota (Photos)

Construction trades lead the list of top growing and top paying jobs in Minnesota. Medical jobs are also in demand. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) just released employment outlook information that may interest to you. The following jobs lead the list of statewide employment projections for 2010 to 2020.

1. Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters
Earn $30 to $35 per hour median pay to work on water pipes, gas pipes, heating systems, cooling systems, or sprinklers mostly in the construction industry. Requires long-term on-the-job training. Successful plumbers enjoy hands-on work, have a high degree of dependability and like attention to detail. See an earlier article about the shortage of people choosing skills training. DEED says demand is expected to grow 41 percent over the next ten years.

2. Cement Masons and Concrete Finishers
Earn $20 to $35 per hour median pay to align forms, smooth concrete surfaces, patch voids and cut expansion joints. The pay is good for less training requirements than most other jobs. Again, successful masons are hands-on, dependable and pay attention to detail. Ten-year demand is around 37 percent.

3. Cost Estimators
Earn $27 to 29 per hour median wages preparing cost estimates for construction projects or manufactured products to write up bids or determine product price. You will find a majority of Cost Estimators in construction but many work in manufacturing. A bachelor’s degree is commonly required for this position. Estimators like detail and analysis. 4. Electricians
Earn $32 to $34 per hour median wages installing, maintain, and repair electrical. Ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes. Electrician work can be classified as either construction or maintenance. In general, construction electricians assemble and install electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures. Maintenance electricians maintain and repair systems. Requires long-term on-the-job training, a high degree of attention to detail and dependability. Demand is expected to grow 33 percent.

5. Physical Therapists
Earn about $35 per hour median wages caring for patients with disabilities, injuries, or pain. Physical therapy programs can be completed in three years but most have a four-year degree and many have a master’s degree. Being sensitive to others' needs and feelings and being understanding and helpful are the hallmarks of a good physical tharapist. Demand is expected to grow 33 percent from years 2010 to 2020.

6. Market Research Analysts and Marketing Specialists
Earn $32 to $33 per hour median wages for looking at consumer wants and needs, and trends in industry and government purchases to determine potential sales of a product or service, or create a marketing campaign. This position commonly requires a bachelor’s degree while many have a master’s degree. Analytical people who are honest and ethical, like investigation and enterprise tend to succeed in market research.

7. Medical Secretaries
Earn $18 to $19 per hour median wages running a medical office, clinic or laboratory. Medical secretaries schedule appointments, bill patients, transcribe dictation and compile and record medical charts. Most have high school or some college education. Successful secretaries are honest and ethical, dependable, have a concern for others and like to work within set rules and procedures.

8. Computer-Controlled Machine Tool Operators
Earn $18 to $19 per hour median wages cutting, shaping and drilling metal or plastic on computer-controlled machines or robots. Many have high school or some college but some do not have either. Jobs are hands-on. Successful operators like attention to detail, are dependable and are cooperative.

9. Family and General Practitioners
Earn $173,930 per year median wages as a physician diagnosing, treating, and helping prevent diseases and injuries that commonly occur in the general population. These are the best paying jobs in Minnesota.

10. Radiologic Technologists
Earn $29 to $30 per hour median wages working in Radiology or Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Requires a two-year associate degree and a certification exam. A few graduate with a four-year bachelor's degree. Job requires being sensitive to others' needs and feelings and being understanding and helpful on the job.
