#22 – DeGeneration X (Shawn Michaels & Triple H) versus Legacy (Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes)

WWF SummerSlam 2009

August 23, 2009

This match was designed as a coming out for the young stars of Legacy. Triple H had been battling Randy Orton and his Legacy cohorts all through 2009. He battled them in singles matches, four and six man tag matches and handicap matches. He even traded the WWE Championship with Randy Orton multiple times. Once that singles rivalry had been completely exhausted, he turned his attention to Orton’s henchman, the young Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes.

After DiBiase and Rhodes beat Triple H in a handicap match on RAW weeks before SummerSlam, Triple H looked to his long-time friend and partner Shawn Michaels in order to reform their old partnership. Michaels had not been seen on WWE television since WrestleMania XXV, but was easily lured back to the fold in order to help his friend take care of some longstanding enemies.

The match turned into a great showcase for the young studs. Triple H and Michaels had been in main events for years but this was a change to see if the young second generation stars could handle it in a main event scenario. The duo delivered in spades.

It was a fantastic match that saw Legacy have the established DeGeneration X completely scouted. The knew DX's moves and felt one step ahead of them at all times. It was only when Michaels hit a desperation superkick that DX got the victory. Sweet Chin Music is always a match ender, as it was here.

The match spawned a much larger rivalry between the two duos that led two more high profile pay per view bouts at Breaking Point and Hell in a Cell. While DX ended up winning the feud it certainly opened peoples eyes to what the young DiBiase and Rhodes were capable of.
