Top music picks for the weekend

It seems that the past few weekends have been incredible when it comes to the quality of shows coming through our great city. This weekend is no different. Here are suggestions for your Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. These three shows display the fantastic variety of music and events to be found in Austin.

Thursday, September 24
Prefuse 73 at Aces Lounge
Event Listing on Do512

In this current incarnation, the man behind Prefuse 73, Scott Herrin, throws together instrumental hip-hop with "glitch electronica" melodies. It's like DJ Shadow meets Glitch Mob. In April of this year, Prefuse 73 released his latest album Everything She Touched Turned to Ampexian. Expect a heavy set that will blow the roof off Aces.

On top of that, the night will be filled out with a range of genres thanks to a host of guest DJs. From nu-jazz breaks to dubstep, Digg, Nick-Nack, Andrew Parsons, and Simon Sax will round out the night. As usual, local Aces residents G King and Pharo will also be on hand.

Aces Lounge has put on some great shows recently and I expect this one to be no different. Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased at Frontgate.

Friday, September 25
Rob Dickinson at Mixx
Event Listing on Do512

Rob was the lead singer and brains behind 90s shoegaze alt-rockers The Catherine Wheel and he'll be at Mixx, courtesy of Do512.com, Yetti Rock, and TwoGroove. He's since gone solo, performing all over the world. Rob will be playing originals as well as classic Catherine Wheel hits.

Joining Rob are well-known local acts Lost Werks, Buttercup, and STEREO IS A LIE. This show will be something of a coming out party for Mixx, a nightclub turned music venue.

Tickets are still available at Frontgate Tickets for only $10 (that includes the service charge). Get them now, the price will go up at the door.

Saturday, September 26
Under Pressure Grand Opening
Event Listing on Do512

Free drinks, live music, art, and fashion. Oh, and screen printing. Under Pressure screen shop will be holding a grand opening event on Saturday from 5pm-11pm at their new location on South First. The event will feature music from Wiretree, The Bubbles, Holy Fiction, Frantic Clam and Jonny Whutnot. Included will be works by local artists, a half-pipe set up by Versatile Skate Shop, handmade jewelry vendors, and a jam-packed raffle. An event photographer will be capturing the entire evening, so make sure to stop by the booth.

At 7pm, attendees can catch a series of featured vintage styles and screened clothing worn by local models strutting the runway. Cream Vintage Clothing and Envy Clothing Boutique will be providing the fashions and Frenchy’s Salon will be styling the fabulous up-do’s.
