Top Kindle books for Jan. 14, 2012

The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins continues to hold down the top three positions in Kindle ebook sales, but author Ed McBain added titles of his own to today's top 10.

Hopping into the top 10 are four novels in McBain’s 87th Precinct series ("The Con Man," "Lady, Lady I Did It," "Killer's Wedge," "Lady Killer" and "The Mugger.")

McBain wrote dozens of 87th Precinct novels from 1956 to his death in 2005.

Perhaps, his most-famous title was "The Blackboard Jungle." Written in 1954 under the name Evan Hunter, the novel was based on his experiences as a teacher. It became a classic, early movie about teen rebellion starring Glenn Ford, Sidney Poitier and Vic Morrow with bit parts by future comedy stars Jamie Farr and Richard Deacon.

With Collins and McBain taking eight of the 10 titles, who is left?

Kathleen Long is No. 8 with "Chasing Rainbows," about a woman whose father has just died and whose husband has left her for another woman.

"In life, you either choose to sing a rainbow, or you don't," the book blurb says. "For Bernie, the singing is about to begin."

In 10th place is "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett, an excellent book about civil rights in the early 1960s south that became an excellent movie. It is difficult to imagine "The Help" not receiving recognition at the Oscars.
