Summer in the city has arrived, and there are many events planned in Harrisburg, most notably the Fourth of July weekend celebration. In addition, many other activities are in the works to really get your summer heated up. Here are some not-to-miss events planned for Harrisburg in July.

The Great Independence Weekend Walkaround

The city’s annual Fourth of July Celebration, the Great Independence Weekend Walkaround, is slated for Friday, July 4 through Sunday, July 6 this year. It will be held along Riverfront Park, on City Island and at other sites throughout the city, rain or shine. There will be arts and crafts, food vendors, musical entertainment and activities for children. New this year is the Wine Village and a lighted boat parade. The fireworks show is slated to begin at dusk on Friday. Also planned is a karate tournament and a Children’s Festival.

In addition to the Fourth of July festivities, mark these upcoming events on your calendar as well:

Free HSO Summer Performances

Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra is planning a number of free outdoor summer concerts throughout the Harrisburg area. Bring blankets, lawn chairs and enjoy music under the stars. This year’s theme is A Celebration of the American Veteran. Shows will be held July 3 through July 7 at different venues, including Harrisburg on July 5.

Live Reading of the Declaration of Independence

The Historical Society of Dauphin County will present a live reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 4 on the front steps of the John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion. There will be read by a re-enactor dressed as John Harris Jr. at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. This is a free event; tours of the mansion are also available for $4.

Harrisburg Food Truck Feast

Come to Harrisburg on July 18 for the first of four monthly food truck feasts. This event is held the third Friday of every month from July to October. Sample everything from Cuban sandwiches to pulled pork to fried pickles to wood-fired pizza. There will also be live music at this first event.

Wine and Cheese Tasting

Enjoy a wine and cheese tasting cruise on board the Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat in Harrisburg on July 27. You get a two-hour cruise, four wine tastings, cheese and fruit platters for $29.50 (or just enjoy the cruise for $15.) Cruises depart from City Island and run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
